In Russia there are many types of weddings, but a normal one will take place in the next way. The legally wedding is less public. There is no engagement ring , and only the family and close friends will know that they have decided to get married. If the man is a gentleman, he’ll offer his future wife a flower bouquet, but usually, not even something like this happens.
The wedding has to be planed in maximum two or three months. This depends on the Russian bureaucracy, ZAGS- the registration department of civil status, which is responsible with the births, divorces and deaths. The couple made a written request to this department, asking for approval and for a free date for their ceremony. The department will give them some free dates, so they can pick one for their marriage.
An important thing to mention is that: a month must pass from the date when they submitted the request, before they can actually get married. In the communist period, this time before marriage was of more than 3 months. Young people in Russia get married between 18 and 22 years old, one of the partners picking up the papers from ZAGS.
The Russians are calling “engagement rings” the ones that are changed during their wedding ceremony. The two choose them together, but with the condition that the groom will pay for them, this being one of the Russian traditions. Usually, the wedding rings are banal gold rings, without diamonds or precious stones. They are worn on the ring finger from the right hand. If the ring is worn on the same finger from the left hand, it means that the owner is divorced or widow.
